Landmark study sheds light on heart disease

by NC

(NC)—Doctors know that treatment with ACE inhibitors reduces the rate of cardiovascular events (including heart attacks and deaths) among patients at high risk of such events. Yet no evidence existed to prove the same benefits in patients with stable disease, who generally felt well. The  EUROPA (European trial on Reduction Of cardiac events with Perindopril in stable coronary Artery disease) study set out to find the answer. In September 2003, results from this landmark, 24 country trial following 12,218 patients,

were published in the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet. The EUROPA results showed that patients who took daily doses of the commonly used ACE inhibitor perindopril (also known as Coversyl®), in addition to their other preventive medications, had a 20 per cent reduction in their risk of dying or having a heart attack.
