Landmark study sheds light on heart
disease

(NC)—Doctors know that treatment with ACE inhibitors reduces
the rate of cardiovascular events (including heart attacks and
deaths) among patients at high risk of such events. Yet no
evidence existed to prove the same benefits in patients with
stable disease, who generally felt well. The EUROPA
(European trial on Reduction Of cardiac events with Perindopril
in stable coronary Artery disease) study set out to find the
answer. In September 2003, results from this landmark, 24
country trial following 12,218 patients,
were published in the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet.
The EUROPA results showed that patients who took daily doses of
the commonly used ACE inhibitor perindopril (also known as
Coversyl®), in addition to their other preventive medications,
had a 20 per cent reduction in their risk of dying or having a
