Learn how to increase your protein intake to match your
body’s needs helping you feel full and energized as you lose
unwanted kilos and body fat.
About 75% of our weight is protein. It’s in muscle, bone, skin,
hair and virtually every other body part or tissue.
Because the body doesn’t store amino
acids it needs a daily supply of them to make new
protein.
A high protein diet has been shown to increase thermogenesis –
fat burning activity in the body. Eating a protein meal also
has the ability to increase your metabolic rate up to 25 – 30%.
Protein also contains an enzyme that acts as an appetite
suppressant. And it helps block those dreaded carbohydrate
cravings that pile the pounds on in all the wrong places.
Protein can also build lean body mass, which increases the
number of calories burned per day. Protein is not as
efficiently converted into fat as carbohydrates so when you are
trying to maintain your weight it is more difficult to gain
weight when you eat more protein. There is a samll amount of
heat produced (called diet-induced thermogenesis) when you
digest your foods and for a short time afterward. Again protein
produces more heat than the same amount of carbohydrate or fat.
This heat is energy from the food you eat that is not deposited
as fat.
One way to ensure we receive enough protein is by using a
supplement. Much research has been done in recent years on the
health benefits of soy protein. Soybeans are cholesterol free,
rich in fibre, vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids. Soy is a high
quality protein that contains isoflavins (natural
phytogestrogens). Isoflavins have been found to give heart and
bone protection, relief from menopausal symptoms and protection
from breast and endometrial cancers. Soy also has the ability
to reduce harmful free radicals, build quality muscle, help
speed up the metabolism and supply valuable calcium, folic acid
and iron! It aslo lowers bad cholesterol and increases good
cholesterol.
The latest scientific evidence is strong that protein works,
and that your body will feel the difference when you eat the
right amounts of it for your body shape and activity levels.
Protein acts on the hunger-signalling mechanisms in the brain,
causes more heat generation and calorie burning after it is
eaten, and contributes to building lean body mass. For all
these reasons, it is recommended that you take in about 29% of
your total calories from protein. It sounds easy, and it is if
you know how to get the right forms of protein in the right
amounts for you. To help you with that or to just find out more
on how to easily achieve and maintain your BEST SHAPE ever
