Influence of Bird Flu on the Airline Industry

For a while in the media, there was plenty of talk about avian influenza. This disease, that was no doubt undiagnosed in earlier years, became the headline of every news channel and newspaper. It was quite scary and for many people today, still exposed to this virus, is still quite upsetting. Although bird flu is not targeted toward humans, it’s more a virus spread amongst the bird p opulation, there is a small risk that a person could be infected and become severely ill because of it. For this reason most people avoid traveling to areas affected by this disease.

The influence of this disease on the airline industry has certainly been a negative one. Traveler’s unwillingness to visit areas with avian influenza threat has certainly made a difference to the airline industry. This negative influence is likely very noticeable in areas such as Asia and Africa. Although here in North America we hear very little about this disease anymore, it hasn’t gone away and it still has the potential to keep people from visiting risky areas.

The negative influence of this disease on the airline industry is no doubt witnessed commercially. Cargo planes that might typically transport domestic birds such as chickens, turkeys and ducks, may be grounded because the importation of these animals is perhaps minimal. For fear of importing the avian influenza, industry is likely growing its own poultry to avoid the risk of contracting this disease.

When countries demonstrate potential for health concerns, people avoid them at all cost. Tourism in these areas definitely takes a cutting and the airline industry suffers too. The negative influence of this disease on the air industry is just one example. Flying into areas affected by bird flu may be flying into an individual’s final days of existence. Who’s willing to take that chance?
